Outsiders

About

The Outsiders is a 2023 coming-of-age musical featuring music and lyrics by Jonathan Clay and Zach Chance from the folk rock band Jamestown Revival, alongside Justin Levine, with a book by Adam Rapp and Levine. The musical is based on S. E. Hinton's 1967 novel of the same name and its 1983 film adaptation directed by Francis Ford Coppola. This marks the second stage adaptation of Hinton's novel, following a 1990 play by Christopher Sergel. Told from the perspective of 14-year-old Ponyboy Curtis, the story is set in Tulsa, Oklahoma during the 1960s and explores the conflict between two rival gangs divided by socioeconomic status: the working-class Greasers and the upper-middle-class Socs. The musical achieved significant critical acclaim, receiving twelve nominations at the 77th Tony Awards and winning four awards, including Best Musical. Its cast album was also nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album.
