About
A poppy is a flowering plant in the subfamily Papaveroideae of the family Papaveraceae, often grown for their colorful flowers. One species, Papaver somniferum, is the source of opium, containing powerful medicinal alkaloids such as morphine, used since ancient times as an analgesic and narcotic drug. It also produces edible seeds. Following trench warfare in poppy fields during World War I, red poppies became a symbol of remembrance for fallen soldiers, particularly in Commonwealth nations.
