PrettyUgly draws inspiration from Scott Westerfeld's 2005 dystopian science fiction novel Uglies, which is set in a futuristic post-scarcity world. In this world, everyone is considered an "Ugly" until they undergo extreme cosmetic surgery to become "Pretty" at age 16. The novel follows teenager Tally Youngblood, who rebels against society's enforced conformity after her friends Shay and David reveal the downsides of becoming a "Pretty." Originally written for young adults, the book explores themes of change, both emotional and physical. Uglies serves as the first installment in what was originally a trilogy called the Uglies series, which includes the books Pretties and Specials, along with Extras, a behind-the-scenes expansion work. In 2018, four new installments were announced under the collective title the Impostors Series.
