Reconnaissance, abbreviated as recce in British, Canadian, and Australian English, or recon in American English, is the exploration of an area by military forces to obtain information about enemy forces, the terrain, and civil activities in the area of operations. The term derives from the root word reconnoitre or reconnoitering. Types of reconnaissance include patrolling the local area of operations and long-range reconnaissance patrols, which are typically conducted by U.S. Army Rangers, cavalry scouts, and military intelligence specialists. These operations utilize navy ships and submarines, reconnaissance aircraft, and satellites to collect raw intelligence, while also involving the establishment of observation posts. It is important to note that reconnaissance differs from espionage, as spies operate as civilians in enemy territory, whereas reconnaissance is a formal military operation.
