Red is a color at the long wavelength end of the visible spectrum, positioned between orange and violet. It has been significant throughout human history, from prehistoric art using red ochre to ancient ceremonies in Egypt and Rome. During the Renaissance, brilliant red dyes from kermes and cochineal colored noble garments. The 19th century introduced synthetic red dyes. Red became symbolically associated with communism, notably adopted by Soviet Russia in 1917 and China following its communist revolution.
