Known as the "Princess of R&B" and "Queen of Urban Pop," Aaliyah Dana Haughton was an American singer, actress, dancer, and model who helped redefine contemporary R&B, pop, and hip hop. Born in Brooklyn and raised in Detroit, she first gained recognition at age 10 when she appeared on Star Search and performed alongside Gladys Knight. At 12, she signed with Jive Records and Blackground Records, where she worked with R. Kelly on her debut album, Age Ain't Nothing but a Number, which sold three million copies in the US and achieved double Platinum certification. Her first single, "Back & Forth," reached number five on the Billboard Hot 100. After signing with Atlantic Records, she collaborated with producers Timbaland and Missy Elliott on her second album, One in a Million, which sold three million copies domestically and over eight million worldwide. Aaliyah also pursued acting, making her debut in Romeo Must Die and later starring in Queen of the Damned.
