Pantera is an American heavy metal band whose fifth studio album and major label debut, Cowboys from Hell, was released on July 24, 1990, by Atco Records. The album marked the band's first collaboration with producer Terry Date and represented a significant stylistic shift as Pantera fully abandoned the glam metal sound of their previous work in favor of a heavier approach. Recorded from late 1989 to April 1990, Cowboys from Hell has been recognized as one of the first groove metal albums ever made. The album's style drew heavy influence from thrash metal, particularly from the band Overkill and their album The Years of Decay. Initially, the album sold slowly and did not chart until 1992, but it has since become certified double platinum in the United States. The record has received widespread critical acclaim and is today regarded as one of the greatest and most influential metal albums of the 1990s and of all time.
