Hazels are plants of the genus Corylus, consisting of deciduous trees and large shrubs native to the temperate Northern Hemisphere. The genus is typically classified within the birch family, Betulaceae, though some botanists recognize the hazels, along with hornbeams and related genera, as belonging to a separate family called Corylaceae. The fruit produced by hazel plants is the hazelnut. In addition to their agricultural significance as nut-bearing plants, hazels serve ornamental purposes and are commonly grown in hedges and gardens for decorative landscaping.
