About
Rubikon was a secret intelligence operation conducted by the West German Federal Intelligence Service and the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency from 1970 to 1993, with extensions through 2018. The operation gathered encrypted government communications from other countries through the sale of manipulated encryption technology from Swiss-based Crypto AG, which was secretly owned by the two services. The CIA later described it as the "intelligence coup of the century." Additional nations including Denmark, France, the Netherlands, and Sweden were also aware of and utilized the operation's intelligence vulnerabilities.
