Showbread

Showbread refers to the cakes or loaves of bread that held significant religious importance in Biblical and Jewish tradition. The term comes from the Hebrew "Leḥem haPānīm," which translates literally to "Bread of the Faces." In the King James Version of the Bible, it appears as "shewbread." According to Biblical requirements, showbread was constantly maintained on a specially-dedicated table within the Temple in Jerusalem as an offering to God. The bread's presence was mandated to remain before God at all times, as specified in Exodus 25:30. The Temple housed twelve loaves of this bread, which were ritually consumed each week in God's presence by members of the Aaronic priesthood, as documented in Leviticus 24:9. The alternative translation "presence bread" more accurately reflects the religious significance of keeping the bread in God's constant presence.
