As a type of cutlery, sometimes called flatware in the United States, it is commonly used as part of a place setting and serves primarily for transferring food to the mouth during eating. Beyond its role as dinnerware, spoons are also utilized in food preparation for measuring, mixing, stirring and tossing ingredients, as well as for serving food. Present day spoons are constructed from various materials including metal such as stainless steel, flat silver or silverware that may be plated or solid, as well as wood, porcelain or plastic. Many different types of spoons exist, crafted from different materials by different cultures and designed for different purposes and foods.
