His stage name, pronounced "tech nine," originated from the TEC-9 semi-automatic handgun and was given to him by rapper Black Walt, who recognized his fast-rhyming chopper style. Yates later attributed deeper meaning to the name, explaining that "tech" represents technique and "nine" symbolizes completion, together representing the complete technique of rhyme. In 1999, he founded the record label Strange Music alongside business partner Travis O'Guin. Throughout his career, Tech N9ne has achieved significant commercial success, selling over two million albums. His music has been featured across various media platforms including film, television, and interactive media.
