The Black Tones

Formed in 1963, this Irish folk and ballad group has become one of the longest standing ensembles in Ireland. The band takes their name from Theobald Wolfe Tone, a leader of the Irish Rebellion of 1798, with the name also referencing the wolf tone, a sound that can affect string instruments. Known for their distinctive melodies, the group performs rebel songs, historical ballads, and traditional Irish music with strong nationalist themes. Their repertoire blends traditional tunes with original compositions about Irish history, politics, and culture. The band has achieved significant recognition, including receiving the keys to the cities of New York and Los Angeles. Their rendition of Thomas Davis' rebel song "A Nation Once Again" was voted the world's favourite song in a 2002 BBC World poll.
