About
Founded by singer-songwriter John Darnielle in Claremont, California, The Mountain Goats are an American indie folk band now based in Durham, North Carolina. For many years, Darnielle was the sole member of the band despite its plural name, though he has since collaborated with numerous musicians including bassist and vocalist Peter Hughes, drummer Jon Wurster, multi-instrumentalist Matt Douglas, singer-songwriter Franklin Bruno, bassist and vocalist Rachel Ware, singer-songwriter and producer John Vanderslice, guitarist Kaki King, and multi-instrumentalist Annie Clark. Throughout the 1990s, the band became known for its distinctive low-fidelity home recordings, often produced on a cassette deck boombox and released in cassette or vinyl 7-inch formats. Beginning in 2002, The Mountain Goats shifted toward a more polished approach, frequently recording studio albums with a full band lineup.
