Emerging from Memphis, Tennessee, Three 6 Mafia formed in 1991 as a horror-themed underground hip-hop group that eventually achieved mainstream success. Their influential 1995 debut album Mystic Stylez became a cult classic that helped establish the group's distinctive sound. Throughout their career, they released music on various independent and major labels, including Prophet Entertainment, their own Hypnotize Minds label, Relativity, Loud, and Columbia Records. Two of their albums reached RIAA platinum certification: When the Smoke Clears: Sixty 6, Sixty 1 in 2000 and Most Known Unknown in 2005, which featured the hit single "Stay Fly". The group's most notable achievement came in 2006 when they won the Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 78th Academy Awards for "It's Hard out Here for a Pimp" from the film Hustle & Flow. Their final studio album, Last 2 Walk, was released in 2008, and by 2016, the group had achieved worldwide album sales of 5.5 million.
