Founded near Stockholm in 1990, Tiamat is a Swedish metal band led by Johan Edlund. The band has released ten studio albums to date. In their earlier years, Tiamat experimented with various stylistic approaches before establishing themselves in the gothic metal genre. Under Edlund's direction, the band developed a distinctive sound by blending influences from diverse musical sources including Black Sabbath, Mercyful Fate, Candlemass, Pink Floyd, and King Crimson. Their lyrical themes draw from Sumerian mythology and the writings of H. P. Lovecraft, reflecting a broader trend within death metal culture that incorporates such literary influences.
