Tom Morello's solo project, the Nightwatchman, emerged in 2003 as a creative vehicle distinct from his other musical endeavors. Morello is known for his work with several influential bands, including Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave, and Street Sweeper Social Club. The Nightwatchman project began during his time with Audioslave, when Morello sought an outlet for his political views while that band focused on apolitical music.
