Tomahawk is an American experimental rock supergroup formed in 1999 when singer and keyboardist Mike Patton met guitarist Duane Denison. The pair began exchanging music with plans to collaborate, and Denison subsequently recruited drummer John Stanier while Patton invited bass player Kevin Rutmanis. The band recorded their eponymous debut album in Nashville during May and June 2001, released on October 30, 2001. Following the album's release, Tomahawk toured extensively across the United States, Australia, Europe, and Japan, frequently headlining shows and occasionally supporting major acts like Tool. The band released their second album Mit Gas in 2003 before taking a hiatus from 2004 to 2006. During their early years, Tomahawk became known for dressing as police officers in promotional photographs and concert performances. The group reformatted in 2013 with Trevor Dunn replacing Kevin Rutmanis on bass, marking their return after an extended break from the music scene.
