A tower is a tall structure characterized by being significantly taller than it is wide. Distinguished from masts by the absence of guy-wires, towers are self-supporting structures like tall buildings. Unlike buildings, towers are specifically constructed not for habitation but to serve other functions that utilize their height. Clock towers provide improved visibility for timekeeping, while towers in fortified buildings such as castles enhance visibility of surrounding areas for defensive purposes. Towers may also be built to serve observation, leisure, or telecommunication functions. These structures can exist independently or be supported by adjacent buildings, or they may be a feature incorporated on top of a larger structure or building.
