About
Trivium is a name derived from the lower division of the seven liberal arts, comprising grammar, logic, and rhetoric. The term was coined during the Carolingian Renaissance in imitation of the quadrivium. These three subjects formed essential components of classical education as explained in Plato's dialogues and were established as a learning tradition in ancient Greece by rhetoricians such as Isocrates. The trivium concept continues to be studied in contemporary educational institutions, including certain British and American universities and independent schools.
