A turnstile is a form of gate that allows one person to pass at a time and can be configured to enforce one-way human traffic. It can restrict passage only to people who insert a coin, ticket, transit pass, security credential, or other method of payment or verification. Modern turnstiles can incorporate biometrics, including retina scanning, fingerprints, and other individual human characteristics which can be scanned. Turnstiles are used for paid access, sometimes called a faregate or ticket barrier, to control entry to public transport, pay toilets, and other facilities. They are also used to restrict access to authorized people, such as in the lobby of an office building. The device is known by various regional names, including gateline, baffle gate, automated gate, and turn gate.
