The pigment was traditionally derived from the powdered mineral cinnabar, which is a form of mercury sulfide. In contemporary usage, vermilion is synonymous with red orange, though it often takes a more modern form in current applications. The color possesses a distinctive characteristic in that it is approximately 11% brighter than its red orange counterpart, giving it a notably vibrant appearance.
