A vial, also known as a phial or flacon, is a small glass or plastic vessel or bottle. Vials are often used to store medication in the form of liquids, powders, or capsules. Beyond medical applications, they can also serve as scientific sample vessels in autosampler devices used in analytical chromatography. Vial-like glass containers have existed since classical antiquity, though modern versions are frequently made of plastics such as polypropylene. There are different types of vials available for various purposes. Single dose vials are designed to be used only once, while multi-dose vials can be used more than once. The CDC establishes specific guidelines regarding the use of multi-dose vials to ensure proper safety and sanitation standards.
