Webbed Wing is associated with grungegaze, also known as dreamo, a subgenre of soft grunge music that emerged by combining elements of shoegaze and grunge. The genre is characterized by emo-inspired melodies and harmonies paired with dynamic songwriting that features soft reverb-heavy guitars during verses and crescendos using fuzz for choruses. Grungegaze developed starting in 2013, when soft grunge bands began embracing shoegaze influences, following early releases from bands like Cloakroom, Narrow Head and Nevermind Me. The subgenre gained broader popularity around 2023 through American acts including Narrow Head, Fleshwater and Glare, as well as British bands like Oversize and Split Chain. By 2024, grungegaze had become one of the most dominant sounds within shoegaze music. The genre has proven widely influential throughout the 2020s shoegaze landscape, contributing to the development of related subgenres including nu-gaze and zoomergaze.
