About
Whitechapel is an area in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets in East London, located approximately 3.4 miles east of Charing Cross. The district developed around Whitechapel High Street and Road, which follow an originally Roman route from Aldgate to Colchester. Known for its diverse immigrant communities, Whitechapel had a significant Jewish population from the late 19th century until World War II bomb damage prompted relocation. The area subsequently became a major British Bangladeshi settlement. Whitechapel is also historically associated with the Jack the Ripper murders of 1888-91.
