A wormhole is a hypothetical structure that connects disparate points in spacetime, functioning as a tunnel with two ends at separate locations, different points in time, or both. Based on a special solution of the Einstein field equations, wormholes are consistent with the general theory of relativity, though their actual existence remains unknown. Many physicists theorize that wormholes may be merely projections of a fourth spatial dimension, similar to how a two-dimensional being could only experience part of a three-dimensional object. In 1995, physicist Matt Visser suggested there may be many wormholes throughout the universe if cosmic strings with negative mass were generated during the early universe. Some physicists, including Kip Thorne, have proposed theoretical methods for creating wormholes artificially, though such creation remains purely speculative.
